Like most winemakers John Davey adheres to the adage that “great wine begins in the vineyard” but few winemakers can claim the enviable position that John enjoys today – that of overseeing winemaking from vine to bottle, an advantage that John believes gives the Shingleback portfolio a competitive edge.
After graduating with credit from South Australia’s Roseworthy College with a Degree in Oenology, John joined the Mildara Blass group as a winemaker, based at the Krondorf Winery in the Barossa Valley. On leaving Krondorf in late 1998, John furthered his experience both as a winemaker and consultant in regions as varied as Langhorne Creek, the Yarra Valley, Wrattonbully and California.
During the 1990’s a long held dream was realized – John and his brother Kym combined their talents to develop the Shingleback Vineyard in the McLaren Vale, on property owned by the family since the 1950’s.
“When you own your own vineyard and make your own wines, you manage the site right down to the individual vine,” John explains. ”Our goal is to produce superior fruit that will make rich, ripe and complex wines, typical of the McLaren Vale. Small batch open fermentation and minimal handling help to express the terroir of the region, allowing the essence of the grape to shine through.”
John, his wife Kate and their 3 children live south of Adelaide, within easy reach of the winery and vineyard. A keen fisherman, John aspires to reel in the catch of the day.
